Accounting Supervisor- Corporate Division- Hired as Field Auditor, July 2001
When determining where to begin my career, I focused on finding an organization that recognized employee performance, offered advancement opportunity and provided an environment that encouraged the development of personal and professional skills. I found that Sherwin-Williams offered all of these qualities, and more. Not only is Sherwin-Williams a highly reputable and established global company, it strives to provide its employees with a mutually beneficial working experience.
Sherwin-Williams' management recognizes performance and potential and aims to develop their employees through feedback and advancement. During my tenure with the Company, I have worked as a Field Auditor, a Field Audit Supervisor, a Corporate Accountant, and now as an Accounting Supervisor within the Corporate Division.
The Field Auditor position provided me the unparalleled opportunity to mature as a professional. Whereas many entry-level jobs limit the individual, this position promotes developmental growth. Working as an auditor, you naturally build your communication and consulting skills, all while establishing professional relationships and learning about the core of Sherwin-Williams business.
As a Fortune 400 company, Sherwin-Williams offers tremendous opportunity for career growth and personal development. In addition, management is highly dedicated to growing the business through their ethical and socially responsible vision. Director of Operations Accounting - Chemical Coatings Division - Hired as Field Auditor, June 1993
I viewed the Field Auditor position as a Business Consulting position. I liked the idea of traveling to a different paint store every few days, identifying ways to help store personnel manage the store more efficiently and profitably. I embraced the independence and the high level of responsibility placed on my "entry-level" position.
Because Sherwin-Williams is such a large company with many different operating divisions, there are opportunities to pursue jobs in any division or functional area that interests you. I have had the opportunity to work in several different positions that have provided me with valuable experience in both retail and manufacturing environments. My positions have involved auditing, cost accounting, general accounting, pricing, inventory, capital expenditures, logistics, budgeting, forecasting, reporting and general financial analysis. I enjoy managing people and have had the opportunity to do so since very early in my career.
Sherwin-Williams' management actively encourages employees to pursue career growth, whether through further education, professional certification or positions in the different operating divisions.
Company benefits are excellent, as is the 401(k) Employee Stock Purchase and Savings Plan. If you like to be challenged and to have the opportunity for success based on your efforts, Sherwin-Williams is a great place to work.
Plant Manager - Diversified Brands Division - Hired as a Field Auditor, May 1994
I came to Sherwin-Williams to be part of a strong, well-positioned global company offering a variety of career opportunities within the financial and operational tracks. The Field Auditor position provided the blend of financial and operational responsibility I was seeking. Field Auditing also enabled me to learn a great deal about a core Sherwin-Williams segment: Paint Stores. The acquired knowledge would benefit me regardless of which future career path I chose.
I've found that Sherwin-Williams has a tremendous group of employees whose dedication and innovation continue to drive the company to the next level. If you have the desire, ability and initiative, you are offered the opportunity to take any career path you choose.
Managers openly discuss potential opportunities with each individual on an informal basis. Sometimes, these opportunities are based on an interest expressed by the individual. In other instances the manager has recognized a potentially good fit between the individual and a certain position.
There are also formal annual reviews that include a career planning section to facilitate progression into your next desired position. Employees are encouraged to learn about various functions within the company, and managers at even the highest levels are open to discussing opportunities with you. Those opportunities may exist in manufacturing, distribution, retail and division/corporate areas.
